About Our School
The Emil & Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center is a state-of-the-art Career & Technical Education facility located in Winchester, Virginia in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. The Innovation Center provides a transformative environment for students from John Handley High School to complete both career and core academic classes.
The EGSIC is located in the former John Kerr Elementary School building, which was constructed in 1972. The fully-renovated Innovation Center opened in August for the 2021-2022 school year and had an official Grand Opening on October 13, 2021. The building was completely transformed during the two-year, $17 million renovation project. VMDO Architects served as the architect for the project and Howard Shockey & Sons served as the general contractor. The Innovation Center is named in honor of Emil & Grace Shihadeh, the parents of Karen Schaufeld. Karen and Fred Shaufeld donated $1 million to the project in honor of her parents, who worked as a welder and a nurse.
The EGSIC prepares Winchester students for the in-demand, skilled workforce of tomorrow. Our goal is to ensure that every student is prepared and empowered with marketable skills that lead to full-time, high-paying employment and that every regional industry is fully supplied with dedicated, skilled workers that will sustain and enhance their business model.
